Painter and etcher of townscapes, interiors, figures and portraits. Also a notable painter of decorative panels. Trained at the Academy of Antwerp, originally studying sculpting but switched to painting. Travelled to The Netherlands, Italy and later Spain. Debuted in 1873 at the Triannual Salon van Antwerpen. Stayed for a year in Paris in 1876. During his time in Spain (1882-83), he made copies from Velazquez. Member of Les XX,'The Twenty'. From the beginning of the '80's painted his own designs, working in the open air and later brown became the dominant colour of his work. Made an album of etches, all the 'old corners of Antwerp'. Works can be found in the Museums of Antwerp, Brussels, Doornik and Ghent.

Schilder en etser van genretaferelen, stadsgezichten, interieurs, figuren en portretten. Ook schilder van decoratieve panelen. Opleiding aan de Academie van Antwerpen, aanvankelijk beeldhouwkunst maar hij schakelt over op de schilderkunst (Jozef Van Lerius). Reist naar Nederland, Italië en later ook naar Spanje. Debuteert in 1873 op het Driejaarlijks Salon van Antwerpen. Verblijft in 1876 een jaar te Parijs. Maakt tijdens zijn Spanjereis (1882-83) kopieën naar Velasquez. Lid van De XX (1883-84) en medestichter van LES XX (THE TWENTY) (1891). Medeoprichter van de Société des Aquafortistes belges. Leraar aan de Academie van Antwerpen (vanaf 1886). Schildert aanvankelijk genrescènes uit de zeventiende en achttiende eeuw. Vanaf het begin van de jaren tachtig schildert hij eigentijdse onderwerpen, werkt hij in openlucht en laat de bruine dominante kleuren uit zijn werk verdwijnen. Hij verwerft vooral bekendheid als schilder van de oude stadsbuurten van Antwerpen. Stevige factuur, krachtig colorist, virtuoos met het penseel. Schildert een fresco in het stadhuis van Antwerpen (1899). Maakt als etser een album van oude hoekjes in Antwerpen. Werk in de Musea van Antwerpen, Brussel, Doornik en Gent.
